Repairing Problems Your HVAC System Might Experience

Blog

If your HVAC unit is suffering significant problems, there are many ways that this could impact the comfort of those living in your home. There are many particular issues that can have a negative impact on the performance of your home's HVAC system, and it is easy to underappreciate the full range of problems that the unit can experience.

Heating Units Can Become Too Hot

While it is true that you will want your heating system to output a substantial amount of heat when it is running, it is possible for the heating unit to become too hot. If this occurs, it will be able to suffer major damage that could lead to the heater malfunctioning. In extreme cases, this overheating could potentially cause severe damage to the unit that may require it to be completely replaced. A common reason for this damage can be the vents becoming clogged as this could prevent the excess heat from venting away from the more sensitive components.

An AC Unit That Is Iced Over Can Suffer Major Damage

While heating systems can be prone to overheating, the air conditioning unit can actually ice over. If a thick layer of ice forms over the air conditioning unit, it could quickly cause severe damage to the unit. In addition to the blower burning itself out due to a lack of airflow. Additionally, the extreme cold from the ice can actually cause some of the components of the air conditioning system to rupture. This can be especially likely with the coils of the unit. Unfortunately, ruptures in these components will likely lead to them needing to be replaced as patching them may be very difficult. There will also be a risk of the refrigerant that leaks out causing additional complications and damage to the unit.

Cover The HVAC Units During The Off-Season

Depending on the season, you may go for months without needing to use the heating unit or the air conditioning system. If you have separate heating and cooling units, it can make sense to cover them during the off-seasons when you are unlikely to need to use them. This can drastically reduce the amount of dust that may settle inside the unit as these accumulations could have severe impacts on the efficiency of the unit when you need to use it again. This is particularly noticeable as the dust can make a burning odor when the heater is activated for the first time. However, using a cover for the system can help to reduce this smell when you turn on the heater for the first time of the year.
