Installing Air Conditioning in Your Home

Blog

Adding air conditioning to an existing home is often a big project, but it can be worth it if you live in a warm climate. There are several different options for adding air conditioning, but depending on the structure and available space, AC installation may require some non-traditional solutions.

Installing New Air Conditioning

In many homes, air conditioning was not an option, so if you are considering an AC installation, you will need to have the entire system put into the house. If your home already has heating ducts from a hot air furnace, the AC may be able to use the same ductwork, but your installer will have to inspect the current ducts to be sure.

If the home does not have ducts in it, the AC installation company will need to run ducts throughout the house. There are some options like flexible ducts that can be slid into place if there is room inside walls and under floors, but if there is not, it may mean that the installer needs to open some walls to put the ductwork in place.

If this is the case, you will also need to consider having some additional work done to repair any walls that are cut open. However, if you were considering some remodeling, this might be the best time to do it, so you can roll all the work into one project.

Single Room Cooling

Another option that might be a better fit, especially for smaller homes, is a single room system called a mini-split system. These units can be put in by an AC installation company, and they do not require ductwork installation. Part of the system is inside on the wall, and the other potion is mounted outside with only a couple of refrigerant lines connecting them.

One advantage to these systems is that the AC installation is quick and easy, and you do not need to tear up your home walls to install it. Putting one of these mini split AC systems in several rooms of your home will be enough to cool things off, and they are controlled separately, so if you want the temperature warmer or cooler in your bedroom or the living room, you have the ability to do that.

If you have AC in your home but need to put it in a new addition, or maybe a converted garage apartment, these units make that possible and are a fraction of the cost of a new AC installation for the entire home.

HVAC contractors focus on maintaining and repairing the air conditioner, furnace, and ductwork used in your building. To keep the heating and cooling system in good shape, contractors may need to replace internal components, clean out channels, or simply perform a full upgrade. I will talk about the tools and techniques used to maintain and repair the equipment in your building. I will also share information about new products as they hit the HVAC market. I hope you will follow along and learn all you can.
