4 Tasks That Need To Be Done Routinely To Avoid AC Failure In Extreme Heat

Blog

Your AC is a complicated system that uses a compressed gas, fans and a system of ducts to distribute cool air throughout your home. Hot weather and lack of maintenance causes a variety of different AC problems when upkeep is not done. To avoid AC problems and failure when you need your AC the most, here are the routine tasks that need to be done during warm weather:

1. Seasonal Servicing as You Switch from Heating to Cooling in Spring

It is important to service your heating when switching to cooling. Over the long winter months, there may also be some repairs that were neglected during the winter months due to you using the heating. This is a good idea to have repairs done and talk with a heating contractor about any upgrades that you want to have done to your system before next winter. You will also want to have the AC serviced and checked for problems that may have developed over the winter months due to freezing or animal damage.

2. Cleaning Your Condensing Unit to Prepare for Warm Weather in Spring

Over the winter months, your condensing unit is often exposed to the weather outside, moisture and debris. This makes it vulnerable to mildew and fungus growth and other problems that can easily be dealt with by cleaning the unit. Make sure that the main power is turned off and clean the unit with a diluted mixture of detergent and water. Use a water hose to rinse the unit and give it time to dry before you turn it back on.

3. Avoid Problems with Allergies Changing Filters Regularly in Spring and Summer

Have you ever noticed that the air conditioner coming on makes you sneeze? This is due to the dust and allergens that get inside the ducts of your HVAC system. It is important to make sure that you change the filter when you change from heating to cooling to reduce these problems. You may also want to have your ducts clean occasionally to further reduce problems with allergens in ducts. Frequent filter changes help keep particles out of the air in your home and reduce wear on your HVAC system as well.

4. Keep Your AC Unit Clutter-Free and Clear of Debris from Vegetation and Trees

The area around the outdoor AC unit needs to be clear and free of debris to prevent problems during summer weather. Make sure that there is no clutter and that any vegetation is cut back to prevent it from causing damage to your AC. You will also want to make sure that trees are well-trimmed and not at risk of falling on your AC.

These are some HVAC maintenance tips to help when you switch from heating to cooling your home. For help with maintenance, contact an HVAC contractor, such as from D & R Service Inc, to ensure you are ready for summer and help with repairs and upgrades to your heating before next winter.
